About the Club

Founded in 1893, the Country Club of New Canaan is a family-oriented, full service country Club nestled in a beautiful, bucolic residential community in Fairfield County, Connecticut. With a very local membership, the Club maintains a familial atmosphere with social and sports programming for all. The Club is currently undergoing a $25 million reconstruction of its clubhouse and pool, with the pool reopening Memorial Day 2019 and the clubhouse slated to be complete by December 2019. This is an exciting time for the Club and the community.

Amenities offered include an 18-hole Willie Park, Jr. designed golf course that hosts 17,000 rounds annually, eight Har-Tru tennis courts, four paddle courts and comfortable paddle hut, three singles and one double squash court, golf and racquets pro shops, swimming pool and pool house, snack bar, men’s and ladies locker rooms, junior and adult lessons and clinics in all sports, children’s summer camp and an active social calendar.

Dining options in the new clubhouse will include the Club Room (80) for informal and family dining, the Formal Dining Room (34) with more intimate seating and magnificent views over the terrace to the golf course, and the new Wine Room with sophisticated seating for 10 for private lunches and dinners. The Club’s new bar will seat up to 32 with relaxed upholstered seating along the walls in addition to seating at the bar counter. The Ballroom will be expanded to accommodate up to 300 guests for private and club sponsored events.

There are 605 member families with gross revenues just under $12 million. Food and beverage revenues are $1.7 million with 11% generated through private events. The initiation fee is in excess of $100,000 and dues are in keeping with Fairfield County. In season there are 200 total staff members with 80 remaining year-round. The Club is operational Tuesday through Sunday in season, and Wednesday through Sunday in the off season.

About the Position

The General Manager will report to the President and 16-member Board and lead the committed management team that includes the Assistant General Manager, Controller, Executive Chef, Head Golf Professional, Greens and Grounds Superintendent, Head Tennis Professional, Head Squash Professional, Head Paddle Professional, and Events and Communications Manager. While construction on the new clubhouse is occurring, the new General Manager will be responsible for the preparations and for the successful opening of the new facility and its related programming along with revitalizing standards, SOPs, training and service, and bringing best practice methods and processes to club administration. The General Manager will look forward to working with the Executive Chef in ensuring an excellent dining program, one that resonates with the needs and desires of the membership and is well-suited for the newly renovated dining areas. Ultimately responsible for the P&L, the General Manager will work closely with the Controller to build the operating and capital budgets and will expertly manage expenses and increase revenues where opportunities exist.

About the Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced private club General Manager from a similar scale and culture environment. Critical experience for this position includes successfully opening new facilities, strong food and beverage knowledge and leadership, solid club administration skills, and a track record of excellent people management and development. The General Manager will be visible and approachable both to the membership and staff alike and will genuinely enjoy building member relations in this family friendly club. Other important skills and attributes include having solid financial acumen, a coach and mentor-like management approach and strong follow through and communication abilities.
