Waterfront Director/Club Manager

About the Club
Cedar Point Yacht Club was founded in 1887 by a group of prominent Fairfield County sportsmen with the simply stated and clear purpose of promoting interest in the sport of sailing. Cedar Point today is a low-key, down-to-earth club whose focus continues to be racing and sailing, and with programs developed and executed mainly by member volunteers with support of a full-time manager, an assistant, and seasonal staff.

The Club was originally located on the actual Cedar Point, across the mouth of the Saugatuck River from its current location. In 1965, Club leaders launched an ambitious project to dredge a harbor basin, fill the swampy land around it to create the club property and a number of others that were sold to pay for the project. The result was the current eight-acre Bluff Point location on Saugatuck Island with stunning views of the Sound.

US Sailing awarded Cedar Point the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy for excellence in race management in 1998, and the One Design Club Award in 2002, 2007, and 2018. That award is for administrative excellence, fleet growth, creative programming, regatta support and member contribution at regional, national, and international levels. On the lighter side, the club received an honorable mention Moosehead Award in 2020 from the International Society for the Perpetuation of Cruelty to Racing Yachtsmen for running more races during Covid summer than any other Yacht Racing Association club – more than 600.

Currently, CPYC hosts active fleets of Atlantics, J/70s, Flying Scots, Stars, Thistles, Lightnings, Vanguard 15s, Lasers, RS Aeros, and PHRF boats. The single-handed RS Aeros and Lasers are the newest fleets, burgeoning during the pandemic in 2020. At 18 boats, the Club has one of the largest fleets of Atlantics in the world. The junior program is stronger than ever with 100 juniors participating in 2020.

The Club prides itself on being an inclusive Club that promotes the enjoyment of sailing and racing for current members and for generations to come. It is a participatory Club with racing, social, cruising, and other sailing related activities that appeal to sailors of different skills, experience, and interests. With a tradition of 130 years of racing and over 100 days of racing each season, the Club promotes high quality, friendly competition, good sportsmanship, and camaraderie among sailors.

In addition to the two-story clubhouse used for meetings and member gatherings, Cedar Point generates some income from rentals of its multi-function dining room and an outdoor pavilion built in 2015. Currently, the Club is renovating the second floor of the clubhouse, expanding and modernizing its kitchen and adding a through-wall bar that will enhance members’ opportunities to enjoy the facility. The space has gorgeous views of Long Island Sound and will be used for various member and outside events.

About the Position
The Club Manager is responsible for overall day-to-day operations, including delivering the Club’s facilities, amenities and services to a standard that ensures maximum member and guest satisfaction in an atmosphere of hospitality, friendliness, and congeniality. The Club Manager works collaboratively with the House Governor / Vice Commodore (these typically are the same person) as well as the various Board committees, including House, Entertainment, Race & Regatta, and Junior Sailing to provide necessary supplies, equipment and staff support for the Club’s volunteers and to ensure “smooth sailing” for all. The Club Manager will provide leadership and direction to a year-round Assistant Manager and seasonal workers for the docks, grounds, and snack bar. While Junior Sailing does not directly report to the Club Manager, the Club Manager and staff ensure that the Junior Sailing support fleet is well maintained and available. The Club Manager also provides recommendations for Junior Sailing operations and is the ultimate authority on safety. In addition, the Club Manager is responsible for the Club’s fleet of support boats, the clubhouse, pavilion, docks, beaches, basin, and all other facilities to minimize downtime during the season. S/he also provides on-water racing support, either by operating a support boat on the course or delegating to capable staff. This also includes management of the Snack Bar, which is directly overseen by the Assistant Manager, and coordinating with the rental of the clubhouse or pavilion for events.

Compensation: The Club will offer a competitive compensation plan commensurate with experience.

About the Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressively increasing responsibility in private yacht or boating clubs or similar operation, leading up to a Waterfront Director position or equivalent with at least three years of experience managing a waterfront operation. The candidate will have a strong knowledge of sailboat racing and experience coordinating races both on and off water, hands on ability to commission, diagnose and maintain a fleet of support boats and know when to resolve in-house vs. outsourcing, and excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize and reprioritize tasks as needed. Experience with budgeting and managing the business to financial metrics, improving member engagement and usage through enhanced services, programs and social opportunities are paramount. US Sailing/US Powerboating Safety and Rescue Boat Handling Certificate, Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED and Safe Boating Certificates required.
