Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland
Golf Course Superintendent

About the Club
Established in 1898 and steeped in tradition, Columbia Country Club is a premier private club in the affluent Bethesda-Chevy Chase area. Renowned for its historic championship golf course, the Club has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the 1921 U.S. Open Championship and the 2003 U.S. Boys’ Amateur Championship, solidifying its status as one of the country’s most respected golf venues.

Columbia Country Club is committed to maintaining world-class playing conditions year-round and has consistently invested in enhancing course aesthetics, infrastructure, and sustainability.

Columbia Country Club’s parkland-style golf course offers a blend of classic design and modern improvements. It features Tahoma Bermudagrass fairways, Zoysia tees, and Poa Annua greens.
The course is 5,191 yards to 6,808 yards, with a par of 70 for men and 74 for ladies.

A brook and pond come into play on several holes, adding beauty and strategic challenge. The course is set on a 146-acre property, with 125 acres maintained for play, and is uniquely bisected by a public transit rail line, making it a distinctive landmark in the region.

Columbia Country Club is deeply committed to delivering elite course conditions and has undertaken significant capital improvements in the last five years. The most recent improvement was the conversion to Bermuda grass fairways.

The Club has also completed master plan updates for holes #1, #2, #14, and #16, further refining the course’s strategic elements. In 2021, a $2.3 million irrigation system was installed to improve water management and sustainability. Additionally, fairway and bunker renovations have been completed in recent years.

The Golf Course Maintenance facilities underwent a $4 million transformation to support these improvements. This included the construction of a new 6,250 sq. ft. storage facility and a complete renovation of the existing 4,400 sq. ft. building, completed in 2020. These improvements provide the grounds team with state-of-the-art resources to maintain championship-caliber conditions year-round.

The course remains open year-round, weather permitting, allowing members to enjoy exceptional golf every season.

Beyond championship golf, Columbia Country Club offers a diverse range of premier amenities. The Club boasts eleven outdoor tennis courts, three indoor tennis courts (bubbled in winter), and four paddle tennis courts. For fitness and recreation, members have access to outdoor and indoor swimming pools, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, duckpin bowling, and an outdoor ice rink created over the pool deck during the winter months.

Dining options include clubhouse dining, full banquet facilities, and a year-round quick-service market, ensuring a well-rounded social and culinary experience for members and guests.

A Board of Governors governs Columbia Country Club under the General Manager & Chief Operating Officer leadership model. The Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the General Manager, ensuring clear communication and alignment with the Club’s mission of excellence in golf course management.

As a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization, Columbia Country Club remains dedicated to providing an unparalleled golf experience, maintaining its legacy as a pillar of championship golf and elite private club culture.
