About the Club

GreatHorse is a family-owned and extremely high-end, private full-service country club located in Hampden, Massachusetts near Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut. This premier property opened in June 2015 after an expansive rebuild of the golf course and construction of a 30,000 sq.ft. clubhouse that sits high on a ridge facing west toward the Berkshires.  The Club is open year round and offers a robust calendar of social and athletic programming.

The par 72, 18-hole championship golf course designed by the notable golf course architect, Brian Silva, hosts approximately 9,000 rounds annually and features more than 200 bunkers and five sets of tees (4,953 yards to 7,522); the rating/slope is 77.8/140 from 7,522-yard tees.

Golf amenities for club fitting and instruction include an indoor golf facility with two hitting bays equipped with TrackMan and Sam Putt Lab equipment, a three-season driving range with covered hitting bays and 13 short game bunkers, and a 10,000 sq.ft. putting green and short game practice area with three playable target green and numerous bunkers.

In 2016, GreatHorse hosted a USGA 4-Ball Qualifier, the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts Amateur Championship, and the GreatHorse Travelers ProAm held in conjunction with that PGA Tour event, The Travelers Championship. Events in 2017 included the 2017 Massachusetts Open Qualifier and the 2nd GreatHorse Travelers ProAm. The Massachusetts Open was held at GreatHorse in 2018.

Additional club amenities include a tennis hut, tennis courts, platform tennis courts, an ice rink, a basketball court, an outdoor pool with cabanas, a fitness center, five guest rooms, private event space, spa service, concierge services, men’s and ladies locker rooms, and a veranda offering scenic views of the golf course and Berkshire mountains. Dining outlets include a main dining room, outdoor veranda and a bar and lounge area. Separate from the clubhouse is Starting Gate, a new private events facility that capitalizes on the property’s scenic views.

The Club is open year-round; the golf course is open weather permitting from approximately April to November.

About the Position

Under the Superintendent’s supervision, the 2nd Assistant Superintendent helps manage the golf course maintenance and clubhouse grounds departments’ day-to-day activities through maintaining high quality standards, developing and retaining maintenance employees, and exceeding member expectations.

The 2nd Assistant Superintendent assists in the planning, scheduling, and supervising the construction and maintenance of: putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and associated support facilities. He/she supervises repair and maintenance of all golf course equipment and instructs equipment operators in the safe, efficient operation and care of all equipment. The Assistant Superintendent supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, irrigation, and drainage systems. He/she also assists in personnel management of the maintenance staff and is responsible for scheduling and supervising maintenance work to achieve the most effective utilization of workers and equipment.

The 2nd Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and may serve in the Superintendent’s capacity during his/her absence. The successful candidate must be a strong leader and team player with logical and effective decision-making skills to manage accordingly and in alignment with the direction set by the Superintendent.

Compensation: The Club will offer a competitive compensation plan, including base salary with standard benefits and housing.

About the Ideal Candidate

Candidates must have a two or four year associate degree in turf care and have at least four years of experience in the golf course maintenance industry; golf course experience with grasses in agronomic zone 345 and at similar high-end private club is preferred. Candidates must be willing and able to work long hours and weekends as demanded by business cycles.
