About the Club

Founded in 1892 and incorporated in 1944, Linville Golf Club is located in Avery County surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Founded by the MacRae family of Wilmington, North Carolina, Linville is a community with a deep, rich history that across generations of association has linked families together with a common bond and purpose – making it a very special place to the membership. The property’s beginnings under the MacRae family included The Eseeola Lodge, golf course and clubhouse, rental cottages, tennis courts, stables, and the surrounding summer homes. In 1944, the resort community of Linville was up for sale and was purchased by several “stewards” of the community forming Linville Resorts, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation. Linville Resorts has its own Board of Directors with a history of not having a committee system.

The Club offers its seasonal membership a variety of amenities including an 18-hole, Donald Ross golf course, outdoor tennis, sporting clays, croquet, fishing club, swimming pool, fitness facilities, formal and informal dining options at the Clubhouse and Lodge, spa facilities, and lessons and clinics for all ages in the various sporting areas. Most of the membership own homes in the community although there is an Associate Membership available for those that are interested in acquiring a home and do not live within 50 miles of the Club. There are approximately 250 homes in the Linville community and a membership (by invitation) of 323 at the Club.

Gross revenues are approximately $13 million with food and beverage revenues totaling $2.8 million. Accommodations at The Eseeola Lodge are open to the public and both the Club and Lodge are operational from mid-May through mid-October.

The Club has enjoyed a history of stable and tenured Club and Lodge management in a variety of positions.

About the Position

The General Manager will report to the Chairman and Board of Directors and will lead a seasoned team of professionals, driving excellence throughout the Club, Lodge and community in this very seasonal, mountain environment. The General Manager role is really that of a strategic partner-leader who will implement excellent reporting and communications systems to all stakeholders including the Board, management team and membership, and assess the business to make recommendations to the Board with regard to creating efficiencies, ensuring systems and controls are in place and effective, and identifying opportunities. While the Club is deep and staid in a wonderful familial culture and tradition of gracious service, the business is at a point of inflection where all systems and process need review and refinement. The General Manager will assess the current staffing model to provide new thinking around the seasonal challenges of staffing across a range of departments.

The prior General Manager has done an outstanding job of partnering with the community and region, in particular with Appalachian State University and other not-for-profit and social service organizations, to build positive and beneficial relationships. It is the expectation that these relationship continue to flourish under new leadership.

Compensation:  The Club will offer a competitive compensation plan, along with standard benefits.

About the Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be experienced in private club management in similar culture clubs and will be affable, gracious and comfortable building appropriate and long-term member, guest and community relationships. It is critical to continue on the tradition of high touch and approachable leadership at Linville Golf Club. Experience leading a multi-faceted operation with management of infrastructure is ideal as is having a strong desire to live in a seasonal mountain community. Other important attributes include possessing strong financial acumen, success with seasonal staffing challenges, and long term and strategic planning experience. The General Manager will be an excellent communicator and will look forward to working with the Board, offering valuable suggestions and recommendations with the Club’s best interest in the forefront.
