About the Club

Founded in 1877, New Bedford Yacht Club is situated on five acres on Buzzards Bay in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. As the second oldest yacht club in operation on Buzzards Bay and the tenth oldest in New England, New Bedford Yacht Club  has a rich history in the area and continues to fulfill its original statement of purpose to “encourage athletic exercises, yachting and maintaining a Club house.” The Club boasts having some of the best waterfront access on the South Coast of Massachusetts and represents diverse boating interests that include cruising and racing, sailboat and powerboat owners, and those “between boats.” The membership consists of families, sailors and friends that all share a love of the sea and enjoy an active annual cruising and racing program including the Buzzards Bay Regatta with 1,000 participants. For children ages 5 – 18 there is a well-attended, eight- week Summer Sailing School. The Club’s fleet includes approximately 150 boats.

The Clubhouse offers a spacious and historic dining room and cocktails in the bar at “Earle’s Place.” For summer dining, members enjoy the outdoor deck overlooking the waterfront. Summer nights bring families to the Club’s lawn for outdoor movies along with other special club events.  Guest speakers at the Club conduct Safety at Sea Classes and certification for offshore racing. The New Bedford Yacht Club is open year-round, with the exception of the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Dining and the lounge are open on the weekends from February to December, with extended summer hours and outdoor service available Wednesday through Sunday.

Gross revenues of the Club total $2.3 million with food and beverage sales generating $425,000. There are 680 members with 125 staff members in the height of season.

About the Position

Reporting to the Commodore and Board of Directors, the GM is expected to coordinate and direct all management and operating functions of the Club and work in concert with the Board of Directors and active committees to assist them with the development of policies, programs, and events. The GM will lead the management team with an inclusive approach that consists of the Finance Director, Executive Chef, Property Management Supervisor, Waterfront Director, Food and Beverage Manager, Security, Junior Sailing Program Director, and Administrative Assistant. The Club looks forward to several small capital projects ahead including dredging, continued dock work and a small kitchen expansion. There are opportunities for the GM to improve systems of communication interdepartmentally and to the membership, continue to refine food and beverage offerings and service, and play a more active role in the new-member onboarding process. Through fiscal responsibility, the GM will be expected to keep the Club in its current positive financial position.

About the Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have private club management experience in clubs of similar scale and culture and embrace operating with a high-functioning committee system as is traditional in a yacht club environment. Strong fiscal, administrative and organizational skills are required along with excellent communication skills to all constituents – membership, Board and staff. A strong leader with solid people management skills is critical to coalesce the management team, many of whom are tenured, as well as to recruit, train and develop quality seasonal staff effectively. Strength in food and beverage is key as well. Yacht club experience is not a requirement but is preferred. Assistant General Managers from larger clubs will be considered.

A college degree is preferred. Professional certifications or similar professional development achievements, are highly desired.
