About the Club

Established in 1887, the Onteora Club is located 120 miles north of New York City, in Tannersville, NY, inside the historic “Blue Line” of Catskill State Park. Founded by Candace Wheeler, an important figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement, and her brother, the Club began as a respite for artists, writers and philosophers to take part in what was considered a novel “experiment in plain living with high thinking.” Since then, Onteora has drawn people interested in the arts and the beauty of nature in a congenial community environment where generations of member families enjoy spending time together. The Club is set amidst 1,500 acres with sweeping views of mountaintops and valleys and prime access to the outdoor pursuits the area has to offer. While the Club operations are in the summer season, many members use their homes year round.

The Club’s amenities include an historic 9-hole, links-style golf course, trail center with miles of hiking trails, private lake and beach with picnic area, heated pool, clay tennis courts, trap-style gun club, overnight lodging, and sports house with pro-shops. Overlooking the lake and golf course, the Field House is the social hub of the Club, offering dining and bar service and six overnight guest rooms. The Sports House, rebuilt and expanded in 2015, is the center of Club athletics and includes the golf and tennis pro shops, the trails and conservation center, and facilities for events and gatherings. Members and guests can participate in and attend seasonal live art and musical performances in the Club’s free standing theater, built in 1926. There is an enchanting historic library, built in 1906, that is staffed with a live-in librarian during the summer season and hosts lectures and programs for adults and children as well as an annual summer fair.

The Onteora Club is operational for member services from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Dining service is available in the Field House for lunch and dinner on varying days of the week as the season progresses. The poolside snack bar also services casual fare. Please refer to the Club calendar for details. The tennis and golf pro shops are open from Mid-May to Mid-September and are closed on Mondays. Gross revenues total $1.6 million with food and beverage sales totaling $267,000. There are a total of 176 memberships, of which 80 are resident members owning homes surrounding the Club. In the height of season there are 35 employees. While the Club has undergone a number of updates over the past six years, it looks forward to future work involving aspects of the infrastructure.

About the Position

The General Manager will lead the management team of the Club that includes the Business Manager, Property Manager, Executive Chef, Head Golf Professional, Tennis Professional, Librarian and Theater Directors. Reporting to the President and 11-person Board of Directors, the General Manager will be responsible for all operations of the Club including the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets and leading the operation to attain the desired results. The General Manager will ensure an excellent member experience in this very seasonal environment, shaping programs, services and events, especially within food and beverage operations but throughout all the Club’s departments. The General Manager will look forward to helping the Board prioritize and lead on upcoming projects and initiatives relating to the evaluation on buildings on property, potential land development, infrastructure repairs and upgrades, and lake front enhancements. Also critical to the role is maintaining positive relations with the Tannersville community and surrounding towns.

Compensation:  The Club will offer a competitive compensation plan, along with standard benefits. There is a house on property for the General Manager.

About the Ideal Candidate

The next General Manager of the Onteora Club will be experienced with leading very seasonal operations with clubs of similar culture and amenities. Having success with seasonal staffing and training is key as is being an effective and motivating leader who is resourceful and not afraid to pitch in. The successful candidate will have strong financial, organizational, administrative, and communication skills and the ability to direct day to day operations of a private club in a way that delivers an excellent member and guest experience. Previous success in shaping food and beverage programming that connects with a well-traveled and sophisticated membership is highly desired, as well as positively influencing all other departments. Project management experience is important for the new General Manager to possess as well as having a strong understanding of short and long term needs of a club community’s facilities. The next General Manager should have respect and awareness for environmental matters and approach his/her work with this sensitivity in mind on a daily basis. This is a terrific opportunity for a seasoned General Manager who enjoys the outdoor lifestyle and is experienced in providing positive leadership in a community setting and all that this environment involves.

A college degree and appropriate professional training is preferred.
