Pasatiempo Golf Club | Santa Cruz, California
General Manager

About the Club
Founded in 1929 by Marion Hollins, Pasatiempo is a semi-private, top 100 golf course about 43 miles north of the iconic Monterey Peninsula (Pebble Beach, Spyglass and Cypress Point) in Santa Cruz, California, widely recognized to be among the finest golf courses in the country. It allocates tee times each day for public play. Pasatiempo was designed by world-renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie who believed that it was his best layout, ahead of even Cypress Point and Augusta National. MacKenzie’s American home borders the sixth fairway.

Over the years, golfers have argued that there are few places more challenging than the course. While the Spanish word “pasatiempo” is translated as “hobby” or “pastime” or a “relaxed passage of time” each shot at Pasatiempo demands attention and focus. Beginning in 2008, the golf course was renovated by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina using MacKenzie’s original 1928 drawings and historic photographs. The result is nothing less than spectacular as bunkers and greens were returned to original specifications. Currently the membership is considering additional work on bunkers and greens with modern turf and drainage technology.

Beyond the historic golf course, Pasatiempo’s outstanding facilities include the famous Hollins House. Built in 1936 on clubhouse hill, it offers a special event venue for members and non-members for wine dinners, weddings and other meetings with incredible food and stunning views of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay. The MacKenzie Clubhouse located by the first tee, overlooks the 9th green and fairway and beyond to the Monterey Bay. It includes a fully stocked golf shop, the MacKenzie Bar & Grill offering casual dining, a member lounge, and locker rooms. Also adjacent to the first tee is a large practice putting green and chipping area. The driving range is located between the first hole and the maintenance facility.

With its great design and elevation changes, Pasatiempo Golf Club hosts approximately 50,000 golf rounds annually and is ranked 12 in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” and ranked 17 in Golf Digest’s “America’s Greatest Public Courses”. Golf Digest also named Pasatiempo Golf Club as one of the top 3 “Courses You Can Play in California.” The magazine ranked Pasatiempo 71 in the “Top 100 Courses in the U.S. (private and public).” In 2014, Pasatiempo received a Golf Digest Green Star environmental award for its measures in dealing with drought.

Pasatiempo Golf Club has the honor of hosting two USGA Championship events, the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and the 2004 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. Since 1947, the Western Intercollegiate tournament held (and televised the last three years by the Golf Channel) in the spring each year is the second longest running tournament at the same course in the country. Only The Masters at Augusta National, another Alister MacKenzie golf course, has a longer record. Pasatiempo also has the honor of being founded by accomplished individuals in the golf world who are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Class of 2022 inductee Marion Hollins founded Pasatiempo, Cypress Point, and the Women’s National Golf and Tennis Club. Class of 2005 inductee Alister MacKenzie, designed Pasatiempo, Cypress Point, Augusta, and many other notable courses around the world.

The Golf Course and Clubhouses are open 364 days a year (closed on Christmas). Pasatiempo Inc. owns the golf course and its related facilities. Currently, there are 417 outstanding shares that are traded privately. Individual shareholders set the price for the share and manage all aspects of the negotiation and sale.
