About the Club

Established in 1913, Sunningdale Country Club is located in the bucolic town of Scarsdale, in Westchester County, New York. While steeped in history, Sunningdale is known for its understated elegance and friendly, social atmosphere. The Club has distinguished itself over the years by fostering a low-key, family centric culture, offering attractive features like early twosome tee times on weekends and an excellent team of counselors to provide highly engaging programming for children. The active membership of Sunningdale enjoy a fabulous,18-hole Seth Raynor course that has been recently renovated under architect Mike DeVries. This newly designed course is getting rave reviews throughout the metropolitan area. The Club also has robust racquets programming including eight Har-Tru tennis courts, two paddle tennis courts, pickle ball, a full range of social and competitive events throughout the season, golf and tennis pro shops, adult and children’s pools with poolside dining and locker rooms, children’s playground, and an active social calendar.

The clubhouse is operational April through November with dining reopening the first Friday in April. Dining services in the clubhouse are available in the Main Dining Room and Grill Room, and on the East and West Terraces in warmer months. Gross revenues for this 321-member Club total $8 million with food and beverage generating $1.3 million, of which 34% is from private events. The course hosts 12,500 rounds annually and is open year-round, weather permitting. In the height of season there are 115 staff members with employee housing to accommodate 28.

The Club has recently completed several improvements including a golf course renovation in 2016 – 2017, tennis pro shop in 2017, the rebuilding of a terrific Halfway House completed in 2019, and currently underway, a renovation of the West Terrace patio. The Club will be renovating the dining rooms within the next two years to enable it to hold larger sized events.

About the Position

Reporting to the Club President and Board of Governors, the General Manager will lead a team of dedicated and high-functioning managers that include the Assistant General Manager, Controller, Office Manager, Head Golf Professional, Golf Course Superintendent, Director of Tennis, Aquatic Director, and Executive Chef. The General Manager will look forward to engaging with the membership on a daily basis by being visible and accessible and will ensure smooth operations and excellent member-focused service with and through the team. The General Manager works closely with an active committee system to implement agreed upon policies, programs and events. In coordination with the Controller, the General Manager will produce the budget and be responsible for expertly managing expenses and identifying opportunities to generate revenue, ideally through growing event and outing business. The successful candidate will be an active contributor and provide support to membership recruitment efforts and the development of a robust new-member onboarding and retention plan. The General Manager will also look forward to shaping and enhancing the dining program and recruiting a new Executive Chef for the Club in the first quarter of 2020.

About the Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced manager within private clubs, ideally from a club of similar size and culture. Assistant General Managers from larger clubs will be considered. Having expertise, passion and a successful track record in shaping and driving food and beverage operations is critical as this is a very important aspect of the Club. Previous success in growing private event and outing sales is desired. The General Manager will have an approachable, positive and warm style, and a sense of creativity to continue to drive excellent programming and relevant family friendly aspects to attract the member of tomorrow. A positive “we can get it done” attitude will win the day. The successful candidate must be flexible to work with the committee system and Board and also be financially astute to manage to the budget and hold others accountable throughout the organization to do the same. Previous success with membership growth, retention and onboarding efforts is ideal. Other critical attributes include excellent communication skills on all levels and exceptional people management abilities pertaining to recruiting, training and developing top talent, and leading an already strong and beloved management team.
