Sleepy Hollow Country Club | Briarcliff Manor, New York
Director of Golf

About the Club and the Membership
Founded in 1911, Sleepy Hollow Country Club is one of the premier country clubs in the Northeast and one of the top country clubs in America. It has achieved a Platinum Club designation and owns a reputation as one of the best-managed organizations of its type. Its “Upper” or championship course is designated as one of the top 100 courses in America by each of the three major golf magazines.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club is a member-owned full-service country club on the grounds of a former Vanderbilt family estate in Scarborough, New York, thirty miles north of Manhattan with breathtaking views of the Hudson River.

The Club membership has a well-earned reputation for being considerate, respectful, and family-focused.  In spite of its metro New York City location, its member culture is more midwestern in its character.  Members are thoughtful and they treat each other and the Club’s staff with respect and care. The members have a modesty about them that allows them to genuinely appreciate the unique environment that Sleepy Hollow Country Club provides.

Families have maintained memberships in the Club for generations and there are many members who have maintained Club memberships for decades. But this tells only part of the story. In the last 15 years, the Club has successfully encouraged junior and junior legacy memberships, which has instilled the Club with a vibrant and youthful energy and has now enabled a new generation of young families to share in the extraordinary experiences possible at Sleepy Hollow. This effort was all in keeping with the Club’s family-focused heritage. The Club is proud of its efforts to create a diverse membership profile and continues in this pursuit.

Members treasure the ability to golf with their very young children on the lower course, revel in watching their daughter as she works at and learns tennis, golf, or horsemanship, and laugh as they share time together at the pool, at a meal or while attending the wide variety of activities and events that are held.  And, importantly, the members at Sleepy Hollow have a deep respect for the game of golf.  They love it. They enjoy the challenge and appreciate the heritage of and gentlemanly aspects of the game.  They shake their heads in wonder every time they get to the fourth tee of the upper course, and they quietly take pride in Sleepy Hollow’s reputation as one of the top golfing experiences in America.

The Club’s Mission is to be the premier year-round, family club in the Metropolitan New York region while continuing to provide an outstanding golf experience with the golf course always nationally recognized as a top 100 golf course.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club is governed by a 15-member Board of Governors and operates under the General Manager/COO Concept. The Director of Golf reports directly to the General Manager/COO.

The Club facilities feature an 1893 iconic McKim, Meade, and White-designed historic clubhouse; an 18-hole championship course, 9-hole short course, 6-acre practice range, and 2-acre short game practice area; 10 Har-tru tennis courts, pool area restaurant and outdoor bar and swimming pool complex; four platform tennis courts; a Squash and Fitness building; 50 horse riding stable, related paddocks and indoor riding rink; a skeet and trap ranges with a 1930’s log shooting cabin, and (18) overnight suites in the mansion clubhouse. In addition, there are several cottages housing key employees and (16) staff rooms in the main building. Additional structures across the property are used for grounds maintenance equipment and storage of equipment and supplies.

The Club’s 18-hole course was designed by master architects C B Macdonald and Seth Raynor in 1911 and later renovated by AW Tillinghast when the “Lower” 9-hole short course was added in 1930. Beginning in 2006 Gil Hanse led a substantial renovation of golf courses. This renovation and subsequent greens renovation were so successful that the work was recognized as the #1 Renovation in World Ranking for five years and moved the course into the top 100 rankings. Approximately 21,000 rounds are played on the Upper course and 4,000 on the lower course.  The 338-acre property (130 acres maintained) provides spectacular views across the Hudson River and is next to the home of the historic Rockefeller family compound.

Sleepy Hollow hosted the 2002 USGA Women’s Amateur and will host the 2023 USGA Mid-Amateur Tournament and has hosted dozens of Met Area professional and amateur championships.

The Club has made substantial capital investments in recent years, including the first phase of a two-stage renovation of the irrigation system, a full renovation of the pool, pool area locker rooms, and restaurant, and solving accessibility challenges and completing detailed renovations to the first floor of the mansion clubhouse. Work on the golf learning center, lower course, and driving range are under discussion.
