Sleepy Hollow Country Club | Briarcliff Manor, New York
Superintendent of Golf Course and Grounds

About the Club
Founded in 1911, Sleepy Hollow Country Club is one of the premier and largest country clubs in the Northeast and one of the top country clubs in America. It has achieved a Platinum Club designation and owns a well-deserved reputation as one of private clubdom’s world class organizations. It is designated as one of the top 100 courses in America by each of three major golf magazines.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club is a member owned full-service country club on the original grounds of a Vanderbilt Family Estate in Scarborough, New York, thirty miles northeast of Manhattan. The Club features an 1893 historic club house; 18-hole championship course, 9-hole short course, 6-acre practice range and 2-acre short game practice area; 10 Har-tru tennis courts, snack bar and swimming pool complex; four platform tennis courts; Squash and Fitness building; 50 horse riding stable, related paddocks and indoor riding rink; a skeet and trap shooting cabin, and (18) overnight suites. In addition, there are several cottages housing key employees and (16) staff rooms in the main building. The Grounds Maintenance facilities are comprised of an historic carriage house complex and structures across the property for storage of equipment and supplies.

The Club’s 18-hole course was designed by master architect C B Macdonald in 1911 and later renovated by AW Tillinghast when the lower 9-hole short course was added in 1930. In 2006-2017 Gil Hanse renovated the greens to USGA sand-based greens and made other significant improvements to the golf course leading it to be recognized as the #1 Renovation in World Ranking for five years and moving the course into the top 100 rankings. Approximately 21,000 rounds are played on the upper course and 4,000 on the lower course. Both courses are parkland style and feature a mixture of native poa annua and bentgrass fairways, greens, and tees. Kentucky bluegrass/ryegrass/tall fescue are the primary rough grasses and native areas are a recent feature on the courses.  Water is supplied through run off and wells into a series of 3 irrigation ponds with over 10 million gallons of storage. A brook and ponds come into play through several holes on the back nine.  The existing Toro irrigation system was installed in 1994 and is now being renovated.  The 338-acre property (130 acres maintained) provides spectacular views across the Hudson River and next to home of the historic Rockefeller compound.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club will host the 2023 USGA Mid-Amateur Tournament.

The Club is open five days per week in the winter and six days in the summer. The Club restricts aspects of the facilities on Mondays in season for golf outings.

This fall, the first of a two-stage renovation of the irrigation system has begun, and plans are in development for renovations and design changes to the lower 9-hole course.
