About the Club
The Patterson Club, nestled in the heart of Fairfield, Connecticut, has been a cherished community landmark since its establishment in 1929. This private year-round country club spans 170 acres in the picturesque Greenfield Hill area, offering an array of dining, social, and sports activities for families to enjoy. With a rich history and a dedication to fostering camaraderie, The Patterson Club boasts a stunning 56,000 square-foot neo-classical farmhouse-style clubhouse, an 18-hole golf course designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones, Sr., as well as tennis and paddle tennis courts, swimming and diving facilities, and a well-deserved reputation for being an exceptional club.

The Club’s dedication to constant improvement is evident through capital investments over the years including a new clubhouse, rebuilt tennis courts, a modern paddle hut, and a recent pool complex renovation. Future projects include an upgrade to the irrigation system and bunkers.  This commitment to excellence extends to its varied hours of operation, providing members with year-round enjoyment. The Club has hosted the CT State Open, CT State Amateur, New England AJGA Championship, and numerous MGA and MetPGA tournaments. The Club is one of New England’s most challenging, respected, and best-conditioned golf courses.

The Club is open year-round with limited clubhouse operations from mid-February to early March.

About the Position:
The Controller position at The Patterson Club is pivotal within the management team. Reporting to the General Manager, the Controller oversees the accounting and financial operations of the Club, making essential contributions to the Finance Committee’s strategic decision-making. Responsibilities encompass budget development and management, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting, and internal controls. The Controller plays a central role in coordinating and controlling accounting, auditing, budgeting, tax matters, personnel management, and related records. This role also entails developing and administrating financial procedures and systems, including preparing financial statements, forecasts, and analytical reports for administrative and managerial purposes. The Controller’s analytical abilities are crucial for interpreting statistical and accounting data to evaluate operating results, costs, revenues, budgets, and trends to optimize profit potential. Additionally, the position involves supervising the Club’s HR function and collaborating with third-party support and on-site personnel.

About the Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for the Controller role at The Patterson Club should possess at least seven years of professional accounting experience, with at least half of that time spent in a Controller capacity. An ideal career trajectory marked by increasing responsibility and relative employment stability is highly valued, particularly in the hospitality and non-profit sectors. Proficiency in managing IT and Human Resources administration is a strong plus. He/she should exhibit leadership and management capabilities and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting software, including POS applications, is expected.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of Connecticut State and Federal Income Tax regulations, which is crucial. Highly sought-after qualities include integrity, dedication, strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and a well-organized, strategic approach. A positive attitude and a commitment to delivering exceptional member and guest service is imperative.

A bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance is required, and a CHAE or CPA certification and an MBA are strongly preferred. The ideal candidate should be willing and able to work a varied schedule and be physically present and available to employees and members. This role also requires the candidate to be skilled in coaching and training department heads on budgeting, forecasting, and financial stewardship.
