About the Club
Founded in 1901, Wilmington Country Club is the premier country club in the state of Delaware and one of the top Country Clubs in America. Wilmington Country Club is a member owned full-service country club featuring outstanding athletic, dining, and social amenities and programming. The 385-acre property (320 acres maintained) provides both commanding and spectacular views across the neighboring Winterthur estate and historic Brandywine Creek State Park.

The Club’s athletic facilities features 20 tennis courts (six indoors including a multi-purpose sport court) of all surfaces including 2 bentgrass (also used for croquet), 11 har-tru, five squash courts (three single and two double), four dedicated pickle ball courts, a resort style swimming pool complex, four platform tennis courts, two bocce courts, and a fitness center with group exercise rooms a dedicated hot yoga studio as well as massage and physical therapy. Athletic facilities support programming for all ages and competitive levels.

The Club is open daily, year-round closing only for Christmas. The fitness center is open seven days per week. Racquet sports are available daily although the tennis shop is open six days per week. The swimming pool is open seven days per week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Off season, some venues may operate on a reduced schedule.

About the Position
The current Director of Racquets & Sports is retiring in fall of 2021 after a distinguished 34-year career. The Director of Racquets and Sports is an employee of the Club and reports directly to the GM/COO. The Director of Racquets and Sports will work closely with all Athletics (non-golf) Committees and the various other committees which represent the interests of the membership as they relate to the Athletics excepting the golf operations. The Director of Racquets and Sports’ primary responsibility is to ensure that the athletic programs of the Wilmington Country Club are carried out effectively and in accordance with direction provided by the GM/COO and the policies set forth by the Board of Directors and various committees, so that all related goals are achieved or exceeded.

The Director of Racquets and Sports directly or indirectly is responsible for activities and outcomes in all aspects of the following Departments: Tennis, Squash, Platform Tennis, Pickleball, Aquatics and Fitness. Growth in junior and adult development in all sports are imperative including introductory programs and seasonal camps. This includes day-to-day operations yet considers long term planning, staff development and succession.

About the Ideal Candidate
The next Director of Racquets and Sports of Wilmington Country Club will have a minimum of five years or more of professional tennis/athletics management experience with a minimum of four years as a Director of Tennis or Director of Racquets and Sports. This experience should have been achieved largely at a respected, full service, private country club. Most importanatly, a successful candidate will demonstrate a dignified persona, be a true leader supporting the team and will be active and front facing to the membership, while directing the racquets and athletic programs under their charge. He/she should have a professional career “track record” of achievement and relative employment stability – not a record of job movement every two to three years. In addition, the chosen candidate will have experience owning or managing a successful retail operation with sales volume of $100,000 or higher and can demonstrable accomplishments in delivering a premier racquets or athletics experience. The next Director will have experience and success in recruiting, developing, and retaining an outstanding professional staff as well as instituting new and innovative member experiences and practices. The successful Director of Racquets and Sports candidate will have a great acumen for the athletics business and expertise and interest in instruction and player development at all levels.

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in an athletic or business-related field is preferred, and the candidate should have a USPTA Master classification.
