About the Club
Founded in 1887 by Candace Wheeler, an essential American Arts and Crafts movement figure, the Onteora Club is a historic retreat in Tannersville, NY, within Catskill State Park. Originally a haven for artists, writers, and philosophers, the Club has evolved into a close-knit community where generations of families gather to appreciate the arts and nature.
Set on 1,500 acres, the Club offers stunning views and a variety of amenities, including a historic 9-hole golf course, hiking trails, a private lake, tennis courts, a trap-style gun club, and a recently expanded Sports House. The Field House, overlooking the lake and golf course, serves as the social hub with dining, bar service, and guest rooms. Cultural activities include live performances in the Club’s 1926 theater and programs at the historic library.
The Onteora Club operates seasonally from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, focusing on member services and dining. The Club generates $2 million in gross revenues, with food and beverage sales at $260,000. It hosts 3,000 golf rounds annually and employs 35 staff members at the height of the season. Members also enjoy reciprocity with prestigious clubs in Florida, New York City, and Washington, DC.
About the Position
The General Manager will oversee all operations of the Onteora Club, ensuring alignment with Board policies and club regulations. This includes preparing and managing annual budgets, coordinating management functions, and working with committee chairs to develop policies, programs, and events. The General Manager is responsible for the quality of the Club’s services and amenities, ensuring maximum member and guest satisfaction. They will manage day-to-day operations, including staff performance, programming, food and beverage, lodging, and external community relationships. The GM will also maintain effective communication with members and develop annual and multi-year capital plans for Board approval.

About the Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the General Manager position at the Onteora Club is a seasoned leader with at least seven years of progressive experience in private club management, preferably holding a Bachelor’s degree in business or hospitality and a Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation. He/she excels in managing seasonal operations, including staff recruitment, training, and business scaling, with a proven ability to lead and motivate teams.
Expertise in food and beverage operations, financial management, and project oversight is essential, along with experience in sports programming and guest accommodations. The candidate should have strong organizational skills, be an effective communicator with high emotional intelligence, and demonstrate a proactive, approachable leadership style.
