About the Club
Founded in 1958, Point O’ Woods Country Club is a distinguished private golf club in Southwest Michigan with a rich history of championship golf. The Club’s 18-hole course was designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., who considered it among his finest layouts in America. Set across rolling, heavily wooded terrain, the course is known for its tight, tree-lined fairways, strategic water hazards, and heavily bunkered, multi-tiered greens.

Point O’ Woods has played a significant role in amateur golf history. The Club served as the permanent home of the Western Amateur from 1971 through 2008 and welcomed the championship back in 2019. It also hosted the 1980 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. Over the years, players including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Justin Leonard have competed on its fairways. Today, the Club continues its relationship with the Western Golf Association and support of the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Located near Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Point O’ Woods offers access to the lifestyle of Southwest Michigan and Lake Michigan. The area is known for boating, golf, farm markets, orchards, wine country, and four-season outdoor recreation.

About the Position
The Director of Agronomy reports to the General Manager and is responsible for the leadership and management of all golf course and grounds operations at Point O’ Woods Country Club. The Director oversees a team of 23 employees, including two Assistant Superintendents, a Mechanic, full-time staff, and seasonal staff, while maintaining outstanding playing conditions for daily member play and tournaments.

This highly visible leader will develop and execute annual and long-term agronomic plans, manage operating and capital budgets, build and develop a talented team, and provide a thoughtful vision for the future of the golf course. Working closely with the General Manager, Head Golf Professional, and Green and Golf Committees, the Director will balance exceptional daily conditions with the long-term stewardship of the Club’s Robert Trent Jones Sr. design. The Director will also play an important role in upcoming golf course capital projects.

What You’ll Do
• Lead all golf course, practice facility, landscaping, and grounds maintenance operations.
• Develop and execute annual and long-term agronomic plans that deliver consistently excellent playing conditions.
• Recruit, train, develop, and retain a high-performing golf course and grounds team.
• Collaborate with the Head Golf Professional on course setup and conditions for daily member play, tournaments, and Club events.
• Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets in coordination with the General Manager.
• Effectively manage labor, equipment, purchasing, resources, and cost controls.
• Lead grounds-related capital projects and collaborate with architects and contractors on upcoming course improvements.
• Protect and maintain the architectural integrity of the golf course while identifying opportunities for continued improvement.
• Maintain proactive communication with the General Manager, committees, members, and staff regarding course conditions, projects, and maintenance practices.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, regulatory, and operational standards.

What You’ll Bring
• Education & Credentials: A two- or four-year degree in agronomy or turfgrass science is preferred. GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) status is preferred but not required.
• Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible golf course management experience, ideally at a well-regarded member-owned golf or country club of comparable size and caliber.
• Agronomic Expertise: Experience growing Bentgrass and Poa annua in similar climate conditions, supported by strong knowledge of agronomy, horticulture, arboriculture, turfgrass management, irrigation, and golf course infrastructure.
• Capital Projects: A proven track record managing projects involving greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, irrigation systems, and other golf course infrastructure.
• Leadership: Demonstrated success recruiting, training, motivating, and retaining talented teams while creating a positive culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
• Financial Acumen: Strong budgeting, forecasting, labor management, inventory control, reporting, and long-range planning capabilities.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with the General Manager, members, committees, staff, vendors, and community representatives.
• Personal Attributes: Professional, humble, approachable, proactive, curious, and collaborative, with a visible work ethic, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to exceptional golf course conditions.
